How to safely set up a roof ladder

To safely set up a roof ladder, you typically use a leaning ladder to carry the roof ladder onto the roof. Here are the key steps to follow, in line with schedule 6 of the work at height regulations:

1. Stable Surface:

Ensure the ground or surface where the leaning ladder rests is stable, firm, and strong enough to support the ladder with a load.

2. Prevent Slipping:

Secure the ladder at or near its top or bottom to prevent slipping.

3. Adequate Length:

The ladder should extend above the roof ladder by three rungs to provide a good handhold when transitioning.

4. Proper Angle:

Position the ladder at a 75-degree angle to the ground.

A roof ladder differs from a normal ladder by having two hooks at the end, allowing it to attach securely to the roof’s peak. This design provides a stable base for moving up and down the roof. To set it up correctly, use the wheels to push the ladder up the roof. Once the wheels reach the roof ridge, turn the ladder over and hook it securely onto the ridge. Ensure at least three rungs extend above the gutter to guarantee the ladder is long enough for the job.

How to use a roof ladder safely

Before climbing, ensure secure footing on the lowest rungs and maintain a firm grip with both hands. Avoid carrying too much weight; use a tool belt for necessary tools and materials. Climb by crawling and gripping the rungs, not the stiles.

Avoid using the ladder in bad weather, as it can affect your grip and balance, increasing the risk of accidents. Be mindful of overhead power lines, as aluminium conducts electricity. Always use the ladder only on sloping roofs, not as a bridge or on flat or steeply pitched roofs.

Suitable Roof Types for Roof Ladders

Roof ladders are suitable for roofs with a pitch angle between 25 and 45 degrees. Using a ladder outside this range can be unsafe. Ensure the ladder is the correct length for the job to prevent overhanging or requiring stepping onto the roof itself. Verify that the roof can support the weight of both the ladder and the user, as some lightweight roofing systems may not be suitable.

When working at height on a roof, it’s essential to wear appropriate protective clothing:

  • Trousers: Protect your legs from cuts, grazes, and splinters.

  • Seasonal Clothing: In summer, wear sun cream and lightweight clothing for protection from the sun. In winter, wear warm clothing like fleeces, jackets, hats, and gloves to maintain dexterity and prevent falls due to numbness.
